At approximately 3 billion years old, Lewisian Gneiss is one of the oldest rocks on the planet.

Around 3000 BC, Neolithic farmers on the Isle of Lewis selected large monoliths of Lewisian Gneiss to build a stone circle (Calanais Standing Stones). The Gneiss pendant is an interpretation of a Pictish symbol carved into a boulder on the neighbouring island of Benbecula around 500AD.

This was during a transitional period in Scotland as the archaic pagan beliefs were gradually being consumed by Christianity. It’s unclear whether this symbol belonged to one religion or the other.

This necklace is complete with handmade, naturally stabilised hemp rope cordage and a toggle made of bog oak dated to 3300 BC.

Pendant dimensions: 28mm x 28mm x 6mm
