NODENS
Roman-Celtic statement piece: rare Connemara marble of two varieties - pendant with thin veins of serpentine and two beads of serpentine-rich marble.
This design is inspired by a section of a mosaic found at theRoman Temple on the Lydney Park Estate at the edge of the Forest of Dean. Built towards the end of the 4th century AD, the temple was dedicated to the Celtic god Nodens, meaning that this was a pagan site during a time when the religion of Rome was Christianity.
A Latin inscription on the mosaic translates to ‘To the god Mars Nodens Titus Flavius Senilis, superintendent of the cult, from the offerings had this laid, with the assistance of Victorinus, interpreter (of dreams)’.
The site, which overlooks the River Severn, was already a place of pilgrimage long before the temple was built and was home to an Iron Age hillfort dating back to 100 BC.
This necklace is complete with handmade, naturally stabilised hemp rope cordage and a 5000 year old Irish bog oak.
NODENS (Nudens, Nodons) - Celtic deity associated with healing, the sea, hunting and dogs. He is equated with the Roman gods Mars, Neptune and Silvanus, and Celtic mythical figures of the Irish Nuada and the Welsh Nudd.
